Mommy & Daddy are Learning A Lot

Wednesday, January 6, 2010 - Day 19

We started doing our research on what makes a baby fussy. Our poor baby Tia seems to have a lot of what makes a baby fussy:

Colic/Constipation/Gas - She shows pretty much all the signs of being colic. Fusses after being fed and diaper change, hasn't pooped all day, bloated tummy, face gets red, looks like she is trying to force out some gas but is unsuccessful, spits up, hard to burp, etc. So we got some Mylicon to help with her gas and hopefully that will help her.

Nasal Congestion (partially) - She is constantly making snoring sounds or breaths like her nose is stuffy. In winter months, the air is dry and can cause her nose to dry out her nasal secretions. This can be confused with nasal congestion which is a more serious problem. So we got her some Saline Drops and are going to add the dehumidifier to our house to get the air a bit better for Tia.

Clogged Tear Duct - I have heard this is very common, but poor Tia will often have some build up in her right eye. Sometimes it is right on her eyeball and we take moist towels and do our best to clean it up 3 to 4 times per day. We hope by massaging her tear duct/nose, we can rid this problem.

Thrush - Tia has a majorly thick white substance on her tongue that is possibly called Thrush. It can also be on her cheeks and gums, but we don't see much there. It very well could be just milk build-up, but it seems pretty thick so we are thinking it is Thrush. We tried to pick up some ointment for this at Walgreens and Wal-Mart and neither place carried what was recommended. Thrush can turn painful if not taken care of. It is basically a build up of yeast from milk.

Hiccups - After feeding about 3 out of 5 times, she'll sneeze twice and then get the hiccups and she HATES the hiccups. She makes these sounds like she is super annoyed every time a hiccup happens. We just feel so bad for her because she'll have them for 30 to 40 minutes and she hates every minute.

She has still been sleeping very well at night, at least 3 hours, sometimes 4, at a time. I've been putting her down for naps after feeding and waketime, but if she is super fussy - she only stays down for 30 to 60 minutes at a time. It is obvious she is trying to poop, but can't. I have always had a hard time in that area and I hope she doesn't get that from me. We did start adding formula to her feeding a few times a day to supplement breastmilk and the formula we use has iron in it which could also be a factor in constipation/gas. Let's hope we can get these taken care of so Tia won't be fussy any more. She is still perfect and every time she falls asleep, she has the cutest smile and chuckle that just warms our hearts and makes all the fussiness worthwhile.

  1. We dealt with a lot of that too and it turned out that Layton had reflux pretty bad. A couple things that helped us, was putting him down for naps in his swing (the sitting up helped his tummy and may be why Tia likes to be held so much. She likes the positioning), switching his formula to soy (no iron), adding rice cereal to his nighttime bottle (helps their tummies stay full and therefore they sleep longer!) and we did end up putting him on meds- which helped TREMENDOUSLY with his fussiness. Talk to your doc. And seriously- call/email/text me ANYTIME. Talking with others in the same boat REALLY helped with advise and support in the early months of new motherhood. I'm not saying your not doing the best and right things for Tia, but it totally helps to be able to share your experiences!

  3. Just in case you haven't had anyone recommend this I thought I would. When little Tia seems to be having gas issues lay her on her back on your lap and pump her legs up to her tummy. I did this with all three of mine and it worked wonders. I alternated their legs or did both at the same time. I think it was great exercise for their legs too. After I would massage their legs while rubbing lotion on.

My three always seemed to fall asleep while I was doing this too. :)

I am sure you are getting all kinds of advice. I hope this helps!
