What about this Lamaze stuff?

Saturday, July 25th, 2009 - Day 132

In all the books I read, couples or expectant mothers are attending lamaze and pregnancy classes. I even saw one for breast feeding. What is the normal thing to do for St. Louis expectant mothers? Did any of you take any of these classes? What would you recommend? Are they needed? Did you get anything out of them? Did your husbands or partners attend? If so, what was their feedback? I'd appreciate anything you can tell me about what you did or what you think is needed. I'm sure my mom never went to any of these classes and all 7 of her kids are fine. Just thinking now that I'm at the midway point, I better start thinking about it. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

  1. Congratulations. What an exciting time for you. As a Lamaze educator I would highly recommend taking a class sooner rather then later. It's nice to know all your options, rights and choices. Go to www.Lamaze.org for a class in your area. Another great resource is film The Business of Being Born. You can watch it at netflix or www.thebusinessofbeingborn.com

  2. Ang- as a "planner" personality you might find it beneficial to go and get information at the birthing classes. That way you "kind of" know what to expect, and know what is going on. They'll we did a 1 time all day (9-4 on a Sat or something like that) "Baby Bootcamp" instead of taking a whole series of classes (for like 4-6 weeks). It wasn't bad, you learned more about natural vs. drugs for delivery, etc. Get a tour of the hospital & learn their procedures. They also lightly touched on other things like breast feeding, care, etc. We did it through the hospital where I delivered.

Have you read the Pregnancy Bible? Its pretty helpful.

  3. Sounds like we did the same thing as Rosie and it was great to get it all in one day. They also went over Lamaze techniques in that class so I didn't feel the need for a separate class (and I didn't really use it much during labor...don't know if those are linked though). I think a breast feeding class would be interesting, but I can't imagine what they would do since it is really something that needs to be figured out once the baby is here. Just know that it is challenging and can take weeks/months to get "right" for some!! I took a mommy-to-be excercise class through the hospital that was a nice time to exercise, talk to other mom's and glean knowledge from the instructor. This time around, I think I'll probably just look into something about preparing siblings for the new babies arrival.

  5. we took a pregnancy class at st. johns and i HIGHLY suggest doing it (ours was the full 1 day class). especialy since this is your first baby, but in all honesty i would do it with every child becuase it never hurts to have a "refresher". the class we took covered everything, including breathing techniques. and yes, doug went with me and he too gained a lot from it. i actually think it was more of a wake up call for the daddy's-to-be to see what exactly their wifey has been/will be going through. also, i was going to take a breast feeding class, but never got around it it. i hear such amazing things about it and it came highly recommended by quite a few women i know.

  6. Jake and I did a one night a week class for 6 weeks at St. John's. I enjoyed it a lot. We got to meet other couples and learn about their experiences and also tour the hospital, etc. What we did was a combo class: infant care, breastfeeding and labor. I can get you the info if you want it.

Also, I didn't show until 30-31 weeks so I wouldn't be shocked if the same happened to you! Then all of a sudden you'll wonder where the tummy came from!
